About the Artist

Carolyn Molder

Carolyn has been painting for almost nine years. She has always loved working with her hands, but painting gives her the greatest satisfaction and is her only artistic outlet now.

A move to the mountains for the climate and lifestyle has also provided inspiration from nature. Her paintings are representational and from the heart.

Asked about her favorite paintings, she replies that landscapes and animal subjects rank highest. “The rural landscapes are to preserve the scenes for future generations,” she says. Of animal subjects Carolyn says, “My work showing my golden retrievers taught me a great deal about canine anatomy, plus gave me a closer bond with my dogs. That understanding and affinity for animals helps me paint them more expressively. When I get started with an animal there just seem to be so many ways to portray them.”

She has benefited from studying with outstanding instructors. Recent workshops with Marsha Savage, Maggie Price and Terry Ludwig have been particularly influential. Terry’s stress on the importance of value in painting and Marsha’s ability to help see in plein air painting, and how to paint what you see, have been tremendously helpful. Carolyn has also studied watercolor with Arleta Pech, Pat Aubé Gray and Betty Carr.

Her art has been accepted by a number of juried shows; Art in the Park - Blue Ridge, GA; Old Florida Celebration - Cedar Key, FL; the Georgia Watercolor Society; Wildlife in the Park - Blue Ridge, GA; Art on Main - Hendersonville, NC; and a solo exhibition at One Dozen Who Care - Andrews, NC. Her 2007 entry in the Alabama Pastel Society Show won the Art Spectrum Merit Award from juror Terry Ludwig; and, her 2008 entry received a Terry Ludwig Award which earned her Signature status.

She has taught pastel at Wood Creations - Hayesville, NC, beginning watercolor at her studio, and has been an assistant instructor in watercolor at JC Campbell Folk School for four years.

Carolyn is a member of the Alabama Pastel Society, Southeast Pastel Society, Georgia Watercolor Society, NC Pastel Society, NC Watercolor Society, Appalachian Pastel Society, Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association and Southern Appalachian Artist Guild.
